Where and Why do humans settle or not settle somewhere?

Where and why do humans settle or not settle somewhere? Ancient civilizations did not have all the materials we have today. For example you could not have lived in a desert such as Las Vegas because it is very hard to find water, grow crops, or find food. Deserts are dry, almost waterless, flat, and empty, so therefor in ancient times you could not live in a desert. People nowadays can because they can get water from other places, they can also build aqueducts.  People would choose to settle in places with water, food, trees, animals, and materials. They needed water and food so that they  could survive. Water to hydrate and food for energy and protein so that they could function. They needed trees for shelter and to make huts and houses. They need animals for food and for their materials suck as bones, skin, hair, etc. And they need materials so that they can make weapons and protect their people, also to make houses or tents/huts, clothing, tables, plates etc. They would also live somewhere depending on the climate and topography. Also they would move too. The types of moving and settlement are migrating which is permanent and there is temporary which is only for a little bit. Also people would have three options for their surroundings: adapt to them, modify them (if possible), or move.
An example where the ideal place and environment would be Greece as shown below:

The reason Greece is a good settlement in because it has a lot of lakes/rivers and freshwater. They also have the Mediterranean sea which makes transport and travel easier. It has food, supplies, materials, and with the transport access to the rest of the world. Also the land is fertile for growing crops. Also it has a lot of water surrounding it which gives it good protection.

Deserts are not a good place to settle, however Egypt was an exception because of the Nile River. The river allowed transportation, water, food, and all life to grow. The Nile would have an annual flood and that would make the soil and land fertile in that area and allowed all the crops to grow. That gave water to all the animals and trees and life there. The Nile was the source of life there, that proves how powerful and important water is.

Places without all the necessities I mentioned are very hard and some impossible to live in. I hope this gives you an idea of where and why people settle. Thank you for Reading!!
